Review of The Prince of Egypt (1998) by No O — 31 Mar 2010
Incredible.
In 1998 DreamWorks became Disney's biggest rival with the release of two very succesful features: Antz and, of course, The Prince of Egypt.
The very first scene of the film already tell us that we're going to see a great movie. It opens with a dramatic scene showing the suffering of the slaves in Egypt, it's great and memorable. Though this film doesn't reach the standarts of the Disney Classics, The Prince of Egypt came very close to it, and it proved that an animated film could be mature, entertaining, moving, and funny all at once without having an uneven result like Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The animation of the film is breathtaking, not only it has scenes of outstanding computer animation like the red sea scene, but the backgrounds are very detailed and the characters moves are very fluid. The soundtrack is one of the strongest points of the film, the instrumental score works very well with the film and the songs are all memorable featuring some great tunes like: Playing eith the big boys, the plague, through heaven's eyes, deliver us, and, of course, when you believe.
Won Oscar for Best Song ( When you Believe ) and was nominated for Best Oribinal Score c- Comedy or Musical ( lost to Shakespeare in love ).
The Prince of Egypt is mature, entertaining and visually impressive, and if I haven't seen the Dream Works logo in it I would think this is a Disney film 8,4/10 - Just Amazing.
