Review of The Prince of Egypt (1998) by Ted R — 02 Feb 2011
Re-watching this film in contrast to the Egyptian protests going on right now is interesting. Nevertheless, the film is amazing in so many respects. The animation is amazing. 3-D animation and viewing is all the rage now days, but I miss 2-D animation and this is probably one of the last great 2-D animated films.
Also singing has gone away in animated films and this music is inspiring and amazing. This is probably one of the last animated musicals that came out. The story itself while creative liberty taken does have the essence of the Biblical story and does a great job of telling not only a story of a people and God, but a human story of pain, fear, faith, salvation and slavery.
The story is real as far as the hardships, consequences and Moses' own fears and self-doubt about himself and what God is doing. It isn't so explicit like in Exodus, but it is there in nuanced ways.
All in all an amazing film. It is sad that some here who just hate it due to it being about God or the Bible in any way will just say "hated it!" without much else. Close minded and mean spirited is not a rational rating or review.
