It's nothing unique. Many films have been made about princes or kings who fall in love with women who are lower than them but there was never one that starred Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier. While at first one would think that Olivier would be the actor to watch in this as he was the greatest actor of his time, but Marilyn Monroe steals the movie right from the get-go. She is not only sexy, but she is also quite funny. It's really a joy to watch her act on-screen. This is definitely one of her best performances. Olivier isn't exactly up to par but his angry outburst are pretty funny. The only real flaw is the coronation scene as there isn't any dialogue in while they're in the church but once the movie switches back to where the Prince is staying and the ball, the film gets back to what is good. Olivier's direction is also quite good and is benefitted greatly by the camerawork of legendary cinematographer Jack Cardiff, best known for his extraordinary work with Powell & Pressburger.

Besides lacking originality, The Prince and the Showgirl is worth watching because of Olivier's direction, Cardiff's camerawork and one of Marilyn Monroe's best performances. It is a must-see for fans of the great actress. 8/10.
