Review of The Prime Gig (2001) by Mario B — 10 Mar 2008
The next person that calls this a "B version of Boiler Room" is going to get punched. Seriously. First off, "Boiler Room" is not the industry standard for this genre; it's barely even a good movie. The only real parallel here, and the one that no one seems to be drawing, is that of Affleck's appearance in "Boiler Room" and Vince Vaughn's appearance in "The Prime Gig" (which is consequentially overshadowed by Ed Harris' brilliant acting). Both give noteworthy performances in films that rightly, neither of them should have been in. "The Prime Gig" isn't good BECAUSE of Vince Vaughn, but in spite of him. Yes, the romance is heavy-handed, and yes, the appearance (or necessity, for that matter) of Vaughn's brother is never really broached, but the movie is good where it counts, and the "pitch" scenes are perfect: Intense, precise, and poignant. Granted, the ending is vague, but it fits. Is it IFC fan-only material? Most certainly. Should it be?
Probably not.
