Review of The Prestige (2006) by Trevor R — 25 Mar 2013
This is a deeply unsettling movie with really terrific performances all around. I don't feel Nolan has mastered the "form = content" approach to storytelling that he keeps riffing on, even as the twists totally blindside me (despite the apparent obviousness of it all in hindsight).
Everything is just a bit hollow when the two lead characters are so despicable, particularly when the happy ending celebrates the reunion of a daughter with her nutso-sociopathic father. Still, the sci-fi Victorian backdrop is beautifully realized, and David Bowie makes an awesome Nikola Tesla (who stands as one of the most fascinating figures in history).
