Review of The Prestige (2006) by Zane G — 08 May 2013
Christopher Nolan's The Prestige is just as clever as his anticipated film Inception.
In the end of the Nineteenth Century, in London, Robert Angier, his beloved wife Julia McCullough and Alfred Borden are friends and assistants of a magician. When Julia accidentally dies during a performance, Robert blames Alfred for her death and they become enemies. Both become famous and rival magicians, sabotaging the performance of the other on the stage. When Alfred performs a successful trick, Robert becomes obsessed trying to disclose the secret of his competitor with tragic consequences.
Magic maybe a fake illusion, but it drags most people in with it's amazement. With films such as The Prestige, one thing that comes to mind is "Hmmmm this could be worth seeing," but as it turns out, if you have the chance to see this film, DO NOT TURN IT DOWN. If you like magic, this movie is right up your rally. For me personally I'm not all that crazy about magic, but seeing this makes me very intrigued about learning the statistics of magic. Since this is directed by Christopher Nolan, there's no doubt in mind that this could be where near terrible. It's dark, mind blowing, dazzling, obsessive and could easily be one of the most monumental films ever made in history.
Now no one could complain about the cast because everyone is just on their A game. Christian Bale, who just happens to be my favorite actor, is always good no matter what role he pulls off. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) is never terrible, and he makes me like him even more due to his charm ness and his amazing acting. The lovely and gorgeous Scarlett Johansson is in this and she is always good. Michale Caine kind of reminds me of the English version of Morgan Freeman and just like Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine is never bad no matter how bad the movie might be. Director Christopher Nolan might just be in my list of my favorite directors because of his beautiful mind.
This isn't my favorite film, but it sure is in my list of my all time favorite movies. It's the perfect movie with great actors, an amazing and mind blowing story, great directing and a solid script. If there were two words I would call this film, those two words would be "wicked clever.".
