Review of The Prestige (2006) by Francisco S — 03 Oct 2015
The Prestige is a 2006 movie by writer/director Christopher Nolan (Inception, Batman, Memento), based upon a novel by Christopher Priest. The movie tells the story of two rival stage magicians who try to outdo each other, with one just one-upping the other at every stage of the plot. There's enough drama and there are plenty of puzzles to figure out about what you see and what you don't see. The movie is clever, but not in such a way that it becomes either unbelievable or totally obvious. In addition, its atmosphere is fitting, unique and consistent.
With great leads (Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman) and supports (Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson), this movie could only become a nuisance through cringeworthily bad or over-the-top CGI-visuals or some kind of forced 3D integration. But thankfully none of that nonsense is present here.
Just go see this one. It's good.
Pros: intriguing, well-acted, visually great.
Cons: none, really.
Verdict: Go see!
