Review of The Predator (2018) by Kurt M — 14 Dec 2018
I've never been a huge fan of the Predator series to begin with. The 1987 Arnold is A CLASSIC and I can argue with anyone that it is an Action horror classic. That being said, every entry, including the dreadful Alien v Predator series, have not been remotely good. And honestly, I would put this somewhere in the middle, as it isn't great but it's not brutal.
Taking a page out of the original 1987's page, the movie focuses on a group of soldiers trying to stay alive , as it seems they are picked off. The chemistry of the group, which is crude and hilariously vulgar, is probably the highlight of the movie. Each character has their own neurotic trait or ailment (some more than others) but they play off each other and it's got great comedic timing.
And it's in this factor, where the movies problem lies. This is hands down one of the best comedies of the year - which is what a Predator movie is not supposed to be. The thing that made the original special is that edge of your seat suspense and fear. At no point during the movie, do you feel scared or threatened by the fact that a killing machine is hunting down people and our "heroes" are in danger. Which takes this out of the action horror realm, making for just an Action comedy with an alien running around.
This is not a bad movie, even though it's getting shit on by critics. It's just confused. The comedy timing will make you laugh, and it's got blood and gore to spare. Is it worth a watch when it comes on NetFlix - absolutely.
Grade : C +.
