Review of The Predator (2018) by Clarkaddison — 16 Sep 2018
This film is bad. If you like mindless action and jokes that I guess are jokes by default, then this is all yours. If you enjoy a good sci-fi plot with things that make you think critically about the world this is not for you.
A good film should make you feel something once you leave. A superhero film should make you feel heroic, happy, or more recently sad. A family movie should make you laugh. More specifically after I saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man`s Chest I wanted to be a fracking pirate.
I was eleven and was thinking of all the ways I could learn swordsmanship like they knew in the film. After this Predator film though, all I could feel was nothing. There are no character developments, all characters have one trope and run with it throughout the movie.
Action is basic Hollywood action. There is a part where I think someone forgot to finish it and the predator looks like it came from Predator 2. This movie wants to have a talking point about the environment, evolution, violence, PTSD, veteran affairs, etc it is all just too much for an hour and 45 minutes.
There are some cool shout outs to the other films in the series along with good CGI/prosthetics for the OG predator (AT TIMES). A morbid scene where two friends take each other out to end their suffering and it was shoot well.
There is a defending of a kid with Asperger’s but then immediately gets called retarded. So, wasted opportunity there. Mindless action with a weak plot brings this movie down hard. That’s all the things I can mention without just going deep into spoilers and ranting about their dumbness.
