Review of The Power of One (1992) by Adam S — 10 Jul 2012
Let me preface this by saying that the novel "The Power of One", by acclaimed author Bryce Courtenay, had a profound impact on me when I read the book. It practically shaped who I am today by influencing my attitude on acceptance to all races (I'm sure I would have developed that anyway, but for 11 year old me, it was a real eye opener).
As such, this story holds a very special place in my heart.
I'm not sure it's designed to translate into film, though. The book is full of so many different plot angles and events, that is does translate onto screen in a rather jumbled manner as result.
I do think director John G. Avildsen and the cast, which include a pre-Shawshank Morgan Freeman and a young Daniel Craig, do the best they can with the limitations they faced, and I'd recommend people give this a watch, but it could have been much more.
