Review of The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) by Forrest K — 23 Jun 2010
Frustratingly linear, with a few late in the game, smugly ironic, moralizing twists straight out of a low-rent Twilight Zone episode. More melodrama than noir. Not even the famed sexual chemistry between the leads did it for me.
Their rapport felt as contrived as the beats in the plot, and any digging into the shadowy soul of mankind was superficial at best. Noir is at its best when the viewer feels complicit with the characters' dark urges, when it points that dirty mirror back at us.
Not so much, here.
