Little could Donald Trump have known that whenever he characterized media reports of his latest embarrassment or faux pas as "fake news," that he was in fact giving director Steven Spielberg's "The Post" such a huge boost in the Oscar race.

The timing could not be more apposite. The packed audience at the screening I attended applauded when Meryl Streep, channeling Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham's real-life role in the 1971 Pentagon Papers saga, mentioned freedom of the press.

Streep, boxing well below her weight, and Tom Hanks, as editor Ben Bradlee, seem shoo-ins for Oscar nominations by dint of their great chemistry and popularity, as well as functioning as vicarious mouthpieces for truth-parched liberal audiences.

Up till now I had been mildly depressed by the mediocrity of this year's contenders. With "The Post" my faith in intelligent movies has been mercifully restored.

This review of The Post (2017) was written by on 24 Dec 2017.

The Post has generally received positive reviews.
