Review of The Post (2017) by Bradley J — 05 Feb 2018
Unsurprisingly, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are fabulous in this riveting, but standard-issue newspaper thriller. The film is frequently engaging, as Spielberg brilliantly recreates the atmosphere of a newspaper room and the various clinks and chinks on the many typewriters, and the film is quick moving enough to be wholly rapturous.
It doesn't break the conventions of this type of film by any means, lacking the risk that characterized a similarly themed film "Spotlight", but it has terrific acting and a solid script.
Streep gets many quiet moments of power, and one empowering monologue near the end. The way she goes from pushed aside woman in the press, to a force of leadership in the films end is wonderful to watch.
Hanks gets a less nuanced role that he handles with his signature bravado. The Post is a solid and important film, one that discusses many issues with gender politics and news circulation, even today, but doesn't quite revolutionize or experiment much to be a huge standout.
