Review of The Post (2017) by Mitchell H — 08 Feb 2018
The Post: Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Singer and Liz Hannah.
The Post is the latest historical drama from the famed Steven Spielberg following in the footsteps of Amistad, Lincoln and Bridge of Spies. It is about the decision of the Washington Post to publish the Pentagon Papers. The moral, ethical and legal dilemma present in the situation bringing accountability to our government. It is certainly a timely subject matter.
It is presented in such a matter of fact way. There are little to no music in a lot of scenes. Characters come in and interact with the situation. You don't learn much about them as people because this is not the story that is being told. It is also not like Spotlight in it being about the investigation process. It is about the dilemma and how that dilemma affects the people right smack dab in the middle of it. Some realize what this means for the country and some are just going about doing their job not realizing their part in history.
This was a fine movie. There were no stand out performances. Everyone does their job in the best manner they know how. It does feel long. It moves along fine but you feel every second. Also it's not very dramatically fluid. I'm not entirely this is what I want to say. It wasn't plodding but it was a slow film. I give this movie a C.
