Review of The Post (2017) by Gonçalo F — 19 Mar 2018
If there's anyone who knows how to make a quality historical drama, a number of directors come to mind. However, only Stephen Spielberg can pull of the task in a matter of months and still add yet another Best Picture nominee to his repertoire.
Filming began May 30, 2017 with final edits, sound, and musical scoring completed between November 7 and November 13 of the same year. For Spielberg to have accomplished such a feat, every aspect of filmmaking has to be pristine.
It doesn't hurt to have veteran performers Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in the arsenal, either, the latter of whom seems to earn an Oscar nomination every time she acts. On the whole, I respected the work that Spielberg accomplished with this latest offering and the effort it took to get there.
I found myself engrossed in the history portrayed onscreen, and took away some new understanding of how these events shaped the course of time. It was nothing short of a respectable Best Picture nominee.
At the same time, however, I wish that, in some ways, it left more of an impression on me the way Spielberg films of the past often have. It's almost a shame that this seemed to be the least memorable of 2017's Best Picture films.
