Review of The Possession (2012) by Susan P — 29 Jan 2013
How many exorcism/possession movies can one manage before they all seem to meld together into one big mess? Well, actually I generally like movies like this, if for no other reason than to look at it from a religious perspective.
This one thankfully moves away from the found footage classification, and instead goes back to a more traditional format. Unfortunately, the whole film seems like something we've seen before. There's the foreboding music from Anton Sanko (Rabbit Hole), a pale color scheme, the creepy kid (Natasha Calis), the cheap jump scares, and the exotic demon.
This flick tries to mix things up by casting relatively good actors like Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Losers) and Kyra Sedgwick (Man on a Ledge) to give the film credit, as well as making the demon something from the Jewish faith.
However, too many of the horror clichés are revisited to make it compelling. It's not entirely unwatchable. If you like these kinds of movies, it's not the worst one out there.
