Review of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) by Lucas Q — 19 Jun 2008
This is a rather fast paced disaster flick which survives by involving us with the characters who they work hard to flesh out in the opening scenes. Did I like it and buy into it. Yes, because of Gene Hackman?s powerful presence and the likeability of some of its characters. The down points include the overacting, surprisingly the score (despite it being composed by Williams, I didn?t like it.), Ernest Borgnine, and its seemingly emphasis on the power of man. Although those are some heavy minuses in my opinion, its positives out weigh them. Red Button?s calmness, Hackman?s confidence, Shelley Winters (she was the most likeable part of the film), and the surprisingly fun special effects. The film almost gave one a sense of claustrophobia which worked toward its advantage because of the dangerousness of the situation.
Overall the film was too corny to garner a great grade, and was riddled with too many minuses to be great.
