Review of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) by Devon D — 11 Jun 2010
So much better than the remake! Let me repeat that: SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE REMAKE.
The remake was just an awful movie that I couldn't wait until it ended. So going into this, I was half expecting the same outcome.
But no, the fact that they build the characters first (rare in a disaster movie) really made the film work once the wave hit.
Gene Hackman runs the show of course and is, well, Gene Hackman! Without him, the film would struggle.
Very funny to see Leslie Neilson in a serious role (and young!). There was a scene where Stella Stevens is climbing a ladder and the characters are looking up from below her (she has no pants on) and I thought 'if only the captain was still alive, we could of had "nice beaver!".
The effects are solid (for 1973) and the plot moves along at a solid pace with John Williams showing his developing ability that would be used to better effect 2 years later with Jaws.
