Review of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) by Joe S — 30 Dec 2011
Timing is everything. In '72, this had to be mind blowing. In 2011, it's silly. I'm guessing there was a 5 year window for this to rule...until most of the cast became regulars on The Love Boat, and Leslie Nielsen ultimately started spoofing the type of role he played here.
Hackman overacts and yells a lot, a bunch of stupid people die, a bratty kid corrects everyone, Pamela Sue Martin and Carol Lynley run around in hot pants (!), and you get to see Shelley Winters in her underwear (!!).
I can't unsee that. The film won an Oscar for Best Song, which you'll get sick of 10 minutes in. Although there are some hippies playing it, so that's kind of funny. Some trivia: This was so widely popular, it spawned a sequel, with an even BIGGER cast! Also, I had no idea this was remade twice this decade.
And finally...John Williams composed the score. So, at least SOME genius resulted from this.
