Review of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) by Evanna M — 15 Apr 2012
"The Poseidon Adventure" is considered one of the best of the disaster genre and is filled with some solid performances, especially Gene Hackman as the Reverend Frank Scott. While there are multiple character archetypes on display here, it's the two helpless girls that almost dragged the film down for me.
Yes, I know it's a scary and traumatic event but damn just suck it up and move to save your life and those stuck behind on you! They literally have to be pep talked to and pushed, carried and pretty much forced to live.
The other characters all make sacrifices and add to the groups morale and hope for survival, a few making the ultimate sacrifice to save the others. The special effects were really good for being 40 years old now and deserved the Special Achievement Award it earned for the effects.
All in all, "The Poseidon Adventure" is an exciting and thrilling disaster film that molds characters (most of which) we want to see make it out alive and that really makes you connect to the film on an emotional level.
