Review of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) by Stcenterprise . — 10 Jul 2012
In memory of the late Ernest Borgnine. This was one of the early English movies I saw in a theater in India as a small kid way back in the 70's. While the effects and all, look quite tacky, if you compare with today's movies, this is still a worthwhile watch.
The scene of the tidal wave hitting the ship, was quite thrilling way back then, watching it on the big screen. This set the template for most disaster movies of that time, get a well known star cast, deaths, screaming, characters sniping at each other.
What works in Poseidon Adventure is the cast, Gene Hackman, always reliable, pulls the movie along as the Reverend who has the job of leading the survivors out. The late Ernest Borgnine, playing a crusty NYC cop, at loggerheads with the Reverend and his wife, provides a good counterfoil.
Pretty much of a hamfest,, tacky in places, worthlessness quite an entertaining movie.
