Review of The Portrait of a Lady (1996) by Winston C — 16 Apr 2008
A divine film. So brilliantly measured and delicate in delivery. Kidman is in top form but it's Malkovich, forever Malkovich, who is the scene stealer. Hershey is perfect as the flawed but decent Madame Merle and I was delighted with Christian Bale - few lines, little chance for impact but so well composed and controlled.
Stunning costume, which should have received the Academy Award, and gorgeous music from Wojciech Kilar.
