Review of The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) by Kathleen M — 04 Jun 2009
See it for Roberts and Rourke and Geraldine Page playing a woman who I swear must be related to me ( as she sips her whiskey, smokes her cig, fingers her rosary, and faces down the cops knees together like a lady) and Kenneth McMillan of the amazing eyebrows.
But the movie couldn't decide what it wanted to be. At times (and the plot) seems to suggest a thriller but the pacing was so slow and uneven. There wasn't even a sense that the director really knew or loved New York.
And Darryl Hannah's character made no sense, to say nothing of her acting. It was like the maker of the film was so in love he couldn't cut anything and as a result there were extended subplots and exposition/character developed that threatened to drown the whole thing.
