Review of The Polar Express (2004) by Vanessa E — 26 Jan 2011
I just saw this movie today, not sure exactly what to expect, because past reviews I heard of it went about 50/50... and I'm no exception to that statement. However, I do give it a slight bigger boost, because it was different in its context.
Personally, I have never read the book... but I wouldn't mind doing so, after witnessing all the weird stuff that was packed into this film during the entire train trip to the North Pole. Dancing hot chocolate men? Beard-pulling to communicate to caribou? Some dude on the roof talking like he hasn't lived a day sober? I must say, they do have originality.
Starting from the one child song onward, though, it got a tad bit flat. It was bright enough a message to keep one focused, but it got a bit too namby-pamby and moralistic for my viewing. But, mind you, I won't mind watching it again, 'cause there was still so much that kept it magical enough to behold.
The animation did it, too; one person I know has mistaken it to be live-action. And who can't love a movie where the train seems to be the star of the show?
