Review of The Pledge (2001) by David D — 18 Jun 2007
For a movie to work as a character-based (as opposed to action-based) narrative, the characters have to be complex, multi-dimensional, and well-drawn. Nicholson, fortunately, is great at making the most of what he has to work with here, and his performance is admirable ... but ultimately there's just not that much to work with. The metaphor that structures the whole story is interesting but a little heavy-handed.
Worth seeing, if it's on TV, but not the most compelling work of anyone involved.
