Review of The Pledge (2001) by John P — 09 Sep 2007
One of the finest casts ever assembled, wasted on dreadful material and poor directorial choices. When the two hours were up, I felt like I'd been watching it all day. A lot of people complain that the ending ruined this film - all that the ending did was stay consistent to the level of shitness we've already seen.
The film has many flaws, but none more obvious than Penn's direction. The film is drowned by his second rate attempt to bring a European sensibility to an American feature. He fails miserably, and instead of delivering an atmospeheric, slow burning thriller, he serves up a platter of weird cameos, and agonising boredom.
