A retired detective, unable to forget the promise he made to the mother of a dead girl to find the killer, is driven to madness by the obsession of catching a monster no one believes is out there. Nicholson stars in the Sean Penn thriller with a slow pace, sometimes dull and lacking energy, other times conveying its compelling nature.
