Review of The Players Club (1998) by Breunta D — 20 May 2008
I really wanted to like this in the worst way because Ice Cube wrote/directed it and I loved "Friday". And while this does combine the same type of comedy-in-truth view of the world (and employs most of the cast of Friday), it's nowhere near as good as Friday was.
Not to mention Lisa Raye is incredibly beautiful on mute but couldn't act her way out of a freakin paper bag; the fact that she's paired up with such strong performers as Jamie Foxx and Bernie Mac really makes that worse.
Still, I suppose it was entertaining enough that I watched it all the way through, and it did have a couple of bright spots (Bernie Mac as the club-owner, John Amos as a cop). And I'm sure in a sense, this is how it does go down behind the scenes in the creepy-ass world of strip clubs.
Just understand that Friday it ain't.
