Review of The Player (1992) by Hector P — 21 Aug 2007
I loved how hollywood was heavily criticized in this film. Robert Altman did a great job at putting together a good cast for a low budget movie which is more than well made. I was very impressed with this movie, I honestly thought that it would be very boring and completely pointless, but I was wrong.
Tim Robbins does very well in his role, a role that isn't really that hard to play but fits the profile for only a few well known actors. I could only picture a handfull of actors that would be good for this role.
The beginning shot, which was a tracking shot of more than 10 minutes long really sets the tone for the movie. The shot lets you get to know the main actors and the people around the studio. To make a tracking shot that long must have been very hard.
I love realism in movies and Altman does just that with this film, every scene is so realistic and full of sattire. The thing I liked the most that Altman criticized about hollywood was their love of happy endings.
I hate how every movie has to have a happy ending and for this reason I praise movies like Arlington Road which has a very sad ending. As well as criticizing the hell out of hollywood, Altman gives us some insight into how movies are produced.
Over all, this movie is entertaining and funny. Don't miss it!
