Review of The Player (1992) by Mario A — 29 Nov 2007
Perhaps Altman's most accessible picture, certainly up there with his funniest, and one on his most linear plots - nevertheless the story of a studio exec who literally gets away with murder is simply an excuse for Altman to (affectionately yet bitingly) satirise Hollywood's obsession with profits over quality, box office over morality.
..not to mention OUR (the audience's) obsession with Hollywood. Great central cast, awesomely extensive cameos, and really just an exquisite yet accessible, clever yet unpretentious piss-take of the wonderful institution I'm writing about now - the one we all sometimes love to hate, and hate to love.
Not to mention THAT opening tracking shot. "25 words or less...".
