Review of The Player (1992) by Max W — 28 Mar 2008
I usually feel with Robert Altman films that they're a little longer than they need to be, but this one is just playful with how much it throws at you. The fact that it's lousy with celebrity cameos is one thing, but the wacky plot, which, as is joked about in the script, combines comedy, suspense, drama, and psychological thrills all in one movie.
I didn't think it could be done, but Mr. Altman did it, and he did it well. I'm guessing this movie gets better each time you watch it, even if the cameos (a VERY young Julia Roberts, who reportedly filmed her cameo for nothing) date it a little.
I should come back to this sometime. Future self, remember that!
