Review of The Player (1992) by Jesse O — 15 Jun 2008
An interesting look at the lives of movie executives, with absolutely no glimpse of the filmmaking process outside of pitching projects. It's funny that a movie which contains so much pitching would have in itself been a difficult sell, especially to studio executives, who are painted as arrogant, selfish and corrupt (even, and especially, the hero).
Robert Altman's directing is a little off-putting at times (he will pan or tilt to a movie poster or street sign at the end of most scenes, either as a reminder to us of the world we are visiting, or a gimmick, or both) but it's a good thriller despite having not much thrill.
