Review of The Player (1992) by Kenneth L — 23 Dec 2008
A fairly funny satire of Hollywood movie making that incorporates lots of movie references and movie star cameos. It has a lot of funny moments, especially at the end, but never becomes a pure comedy. It feels very '90s today, but it's still worth watching.
It has a self-referential quality that later Hollywood satires like Adaptation and Tropic Thunder would adopt. I haven't seen all of Altman's movies, but I feel like this one is somewhat mainstream and conventional for him, at least in terms of style.
It is, however, still very good and entertaining.
