Review of The Player (1992) by Sanity Assassin ! — 25 Jul 2009
It takes the setting and back drop of hollywood/bevelly hills etc , and probably presents it as it, as a cynical, self lusting, and sometimes nasty industry.
Beneaths the bones of this setting, which to me is all lights and noise, is a very good but pretty generic murder crime mystery film.
The highlights are the film within a film, and the essense of the "belief of hollywood" of a happy ending, and the ending of the Player is one which is as happy as it is clever. It is because of the ending, and because of the ironic swipe at hollywood that this film is a critics darling. Otherwise its just good, albeit quite nastily dated.
