Review of The Player (1992) by Trevor H — 09 Oct 2013
A mesmerising production that takes a humorous swipe at the worst of Hollywood's excess, flimsy veneer and dehumanisation. How director Robert Altman had the pulling power to attract so many stars into cameo and minor roles is beyond me.
Tim Robbins plays an executive in a production company who receives threatening postcards as he has offended a writer with his empty, dismissive promise of "I'll get back to you". It's an engrossing story, beautifully acted and sincere in its portrayal of superficial human behaviour.
