Review of The Player (1992) by Darryl K — 20 Jun 2011
After seeing the latest wizz-bang, hypnotic fair now labeled film (Sucker Punch), The Player was a breath of fresh air. It is an old fashioned mystery slapped with a heavy dose of Hollywood satire. Sprinkled with a large amount of cameos, the slowly building story has some watchable performances and a completely wicked ending, the likes of which you've probably never seen before.
And while the camera work is actually not very good (albeit the film opens with an amazing long single-take shot), it proves that story and acting are infinitely more engaging than all the empty gloss of the pristine pictures of any of the feature length music videos nowadays.
While this film may not appeal to the youth of today, when they grow up up just a tad, they'll wake up from the hypnosis and want something more. Thank goodness they'll have things like The Player to fill the oncoming void.
