Review of The Player (1992) by Dustin G — 14 Jan 2012
I think my favorite thing about this movie is the insider's look it gives into the major studio green lighting process. I'm sure Altman knows all about what happens there, despite how unconventional his films always are, and uses that knowledge to full effect in this picture.
The story itself is a great, quirky, black comedy and a slam on the Hollywood system, which is always great, and Tim Robbins, while maybe not the best choice for the role, still does a good job.
There was a moment in the movie where I distinctly saw the reflection of a cameraman in a window, not sure what that was about, you'd think a director of Altman's caliber would have noticed and corrected something like that. Oh well. It's an interesting and pretty fun satirical look at how the big budget Hollywood system gets away with murder. Literally, in this case.
