This film( and it's companion The Reptile ) are the reason Hammer were successful. They are pure gothic on a shoestring budget; Roy Ashton's brilliant make-up ( pre-dating Romero's rotting zombies by 3 years ), and the Cornish settings make for a homely, stylish horror.
