Review of The Plague Dogs (1982) by Itamar K — 20 Oct 2007
This is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. I'm sure the 87% of you who clicked "not interested" are probably just assuming "oh it's a cartoon, it must be a kids movie." Plague Dogs is about as much of a kids movie as South Park is a children's cartoon.
The movie is about vivisection and animal testing. OBVIOUSLY, they would not be able to film this in real time without violating several laws. The animation is beautiful though, so no love lost there.
I've never seen any movie or book capture the dog's perspective so well. When the dogs escape from the lab the little one is amazed at how empty the land is. He had grown up in a big city and assumed the whole world looked like that.
He immediantly assumes that the entire world is now vast and bare, despite the fact that he may not even be that far away from his former home. Some of the accents can be difficult to follow at times and the movie is not without it's dull moments.
Overall though, a great movie.
