Review of The Plague Dogs (1982) by Greg S — 13 Oct 2010
Very haunting film. There's no one I would watch this film, it's pretty much a loner film. I like that you mention the after viewing depression, that is important to note for films for at-risk viewers to avoid. The French film The Vanishing was another film that had a long depression after affect for both me and my Dad, who is not easily moved.
The ending is clear in terms of logistical consequence, but the crucial point is the reversal in Rowf and Snitter's outlook and perspective that isn't visible till the last line. For Rowf, whose experience seen at the beginning of the film makes him fully aware of what is going to happen, his transformation is almost Christ-like. I know, heretical, but that message is a very human one and conveyed perfectly in the last 2 lines. If you catch it, it is a rare gift that can be replayed in one's one relationships. I follow Rowf's lesson with my son often.
