Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Letmeinplease — 13 Apr 2017
Ryan Gosling plays a badass just like in Drive and just like in Drive it's a total miscast. He just has this "good guy" aura around him he can't play bank robbers and outlaws, at least I had some trouble believing that.
The plot wanted to be intricate so badly it ended up not making any sense. Every character here is reckless, can't think two steps ahead, has stretched logic and says some stupid **** on occasion. The moment when Eva Mendez said "You ruined my son's life" was so bad I lol'd. Like shooting an armed outlaw is really such a bad thing (later the son had the exact same logic for some reason). Yeah, when the cop shot the guy he really **** up but he was also the only one who was there and saw how it really was, but the movie wants to forget and remember this fact only when it's convenient. And there are plenty of other examples.
I would've dropped it after 90 minutes mark but it had some good scenes that held a promise of a good finale but no, it ended up in the worst way possible which was also easily called.
Verdict: pretentious drivel.
