Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by David W — 13 Oct 2013
The Place Beyond The Pines is as clear a view into the wheel of dysfunction as you're likely to see on film. If you carry one thing away from this it'll be that the dice of fate are weighted against us and those we leave to follow by the ethical blood we spill with such succinct justifications.
It's rare for a story to be this grounded in what we'd simply call a rough life, and that foundation serves to level our views to just how far reaching the blight of abuse may run in its course. It starts in our hearts, lives in our homes and is as naked as our reluctance to have that shame discovered.
Go in on a blank slate. don't try to map where this story is going. You'll fail and... well that's as much as I'm going to give away. It can't be faulted for the message it achieves to deliver and as such it stands with an assured comfort as one of the best films of the year.
If Apt Pupil and Good Will Hunting could tip their hats to this they would.
