Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Joe C — 22 Oct 2013
I really wanted to see this movie in theaters, but I never got around to it. I finally just had a chance to watch it, and my suspicions were right, this was a very good movie. When I first saw the cast, I thought it may be okay, but the story was so original and creative, that any cast including this bunch here could make it gold.
One thing I really liked was how it was built. It was like 3 acts that are tied together, but at the same time, they have their own thing going on. The first act with Ryan Gosling, The second with Bradley Cooper and the police department, the third focusing mainly on the two sons.
Let me give major props to Dane DeHann. This kid is blowing me away in films. This would be the fourth film I have seen him in, and he is a true actor. I heard he is in the new Spider Man, and I think that is going to be great.
I don't want to give anything away, but Ryan Gosling was good in his time, Bradley Cooper was a different type than his supporting comedy style like in the Hangover films. He is a very powerful actor, and in this film, he is deeply conflicted, and I think he plays that out well.
At first, I was a little worried to how it would all play out, because of the twists and turns, but in the end, it has a good ending and leaves questions answered, but just that speck of what's next? and this is what every good movie needs to end like.
I strongly recommend this film.
