Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Stephen J — 28 Jan 2014
Didn't expect much from this movie.. I'm not really a Ryan Gosling fan, nor am I particularly fond of facial and/or high neck tattoos, which is all I could recall from the movie trailers when this one was in the theaters. This is why I love having HBO, because I wouldn't have bothered renting it either, and it turned out to be a gem.
Not for the light-hearted crowd, this is heavy duty drama material with a long, involved, and evolving plot. If you have the patience, it will reward you with plot twists and well fleshed out characters who grow as the storyline progresses.
Excellent job by Gosling as well as Bradley Cooper and exquisitely nuanced bit parts by several of the supporting cast.
I recommend it.
