Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Jc E — 11 Feb 2014
When will I stop watching movies with Ryan Gosling (Gangster Squad)? Seriously, I just don't get him. When he's not whoring himself out for an Oscar, he's still trying to capitalize on the goodwill the female populous has showered upon him post-'The Notebook'.
He's not a great actor, and this is just another vain attempt at getting Academy members to notice him. It's not his worst part, and he's transposed by Bradley Cooper (The Hangover: Part III) and a supporting cast including Eva Mendes (Last Night), Ray Liotta (Youth in Revolt), Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), and Rose Byrne (Insidious) that help elevate this flick above the immeasurably overrated 'Drive'.
However, Cooper is the main draw here. The marketing focused heavily on Gosling - trying in vain to tap that female demographic - but he's in less than half the flick. Cooper has to carry a good portion of the film, and he's capable, if somewhat unlikable.
Ultimately, this is just another forgettable film in Gosling's cannon, but it's not the worst of them. It'd be quite a task to make a worse film than 'The Notebook'.
