Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by David L — 07 Mar 2014
The Place Beyond the Pines benefits from powerful score and atmosphere and the film's tryptich plot is done for better and for worse - the decision to kill off the main character after the first third is bold and uniquely rare (Psycho is the most memorable example of that), but that decision also hurts the film leading to a less interesting Bradley Cooper character and their sons who extend the whole deal for a bit too much.
It is a very good film nonetheless and although its ambitiousness kinda undermines the whole movie in the process, it is also easily respectable.
