The Place Beyond the Pines has a decent story to it that I felt was like a great novel premise. The first act is very well crafted and has a great intensity to it but that intensity decreases act to act.
The characters throughout the film were interesting and conflicted enough to relate to and the performances were not bad either...for the most part. The issue I suppose is that the three-layered story structure takes dramatic turns and loses a lot of its muster, particularly after 100 minutes in when we are introduced again to new characters.
The closing of the picture truly reminds me of a great ending of a novel but there are many other parts just short of that ending that feel juvenile and stupid. Perhaps this would have been better as a piece of literature than as a film, who can say.
All in all it is a fairly good movie and worth a watch.
