Review of The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! (2012) by Caesar M — 13 Aug 2012
When it comes animation I always prefer it to be done by hands over computers since you could clearly see the passion and effort put into it. While I'm not generally into kids films, I gave this chance after reading great things about it and I found it to be a pleasant surprise.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits follows Pirate Captain who sets out on a mission to defeat his rivals for the Pirate of the year Award. The plot is fairly simple and done well with a variety of good jokes. My only complaint from the plot would be is that the concept is never expanded upon nor is it as engaging as it could have been. Other than those complaints I generally enjoyed it, I especially liked Charles Darwin character for having some of the best jokes in the movie. The claymation is done well and the short moments when we get to see some hilarious hand drawn animation deliver some good laughs. The cast has good comedic timing, but I did feel that most of them didn't get enough screen time. There's really not much I could say about this other than I found it more entertaining than the Disney Pirates films.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits is one the better pirates in the past years that actually has a plot and nice animation. It might be not spectacular, but it certainly enjoyable.
