Review of The Pirate (1948) by Mya G — 07 Apr 2010
This is what happens when you cross an Errol Flynn swashbuckler with an MGM musical and inject a hefty dose of farce. Both Judy Garland and Gene Kelly give hysterically over-the-top performances, most notably in Judy's "Mack the Black" hypnosis number and Gene's ludicrous dream ballet in which he prances through various pyrotechnic explosions wearing a pair of extremely short pirate shorts.
Quite possibly the pinnacle of musical silliness, but extremely enjoyable nonetheless.
