Review of The Pink Panther 2 (2009) by Omac1985 . — 14 Feb 2010
***.
I was very much looking forwards to seeing The Pink Panther 2 as it stars some of the biggest names in comedy including Steve Martin and John Cleese, and is a part of the series that got me interested in comedy in the first place.
Martin stars for the second time as the bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau who is placed on an international dream team of detectives who are all trying to uncover the identity of the mysterious "Tornado": a thief who has stolen some of the world's most priceless artefacts; one of which is the pink panther diamond.
Despite boasting a fine cast, consisting of Jean Reno, Alfred Molina, Andy García and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), the characters seem two-dimensional and unconvincing. Cleese and Martin are the only actors who seem to be living up to their roles. Martin is in his element as Clouseau and is clearly the best choice for the role. Cleese replaces Kelvin Kline as Clouseau's rival, Chief Inspector Dreyfus. Cleese is hilarious in the role and Kline is not missed greatly.
The film can, at times, be very funny but a lot of the jokes seem very deliberate and too obvious to be funny. Some jokes are even recycled from the previous instalment in the series.
The plot has potential to be clever and amusing but half of it is largely implausible. Over all, the film is mindless and wastes the acting talents of a cast of A-list stars but is worth watching simply because it will generate some big laughs.
